At the February 22nd Library Workers Committee meeting, Alex MacCutchan was appointed as Chair and Maureen O’Reilly was elected as Vice-Chair. There is one vacancy on the Library Workers Committee which will be open for election at the April 2nd – April 3rd Library Workers Conference preceding OMECC. The Library Workers committee would like to thank oututgoing chair, Pierrette St-Louis, for her hard work and dedication to the work of the committee.

A new report by The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives shows that Toronto Public Library has been underfunded for the past 20 years. Staff Loss is at an all time high while usage skyrockets. The full text of the report can be found at the link below.

The General Meeting that was to be held on October 22nd, 2012 has unfortunately had to be cancelled. A quarterly report of the library worker's committee will be circulated to library locals shortly.
The library project to help the Moose Deer Point First Nation Reserve began in January 2012 when CUPE 966 heard that the reserve had no school and no library. Children were being bussed to neighbouring communities to attend school and many were dropping out at a very early age due to the inconvenience of travel and the lack of resources near home to complete school assignments. CUPE 966 took on the challenge of building them a library in their own community. Since then the local has been gathering donations of new or gently used books for the library.
At the March 27th and 28th Library Workers 2012 Conference in London, Ontario, a new committee was elected: Pierrette St-Louis, Local 503, OTTAWA; Alex MacCutchan, Local 4366, MILTON; Maureen O’Reilly, Local 4948, TORONTO; Sean Hannaford, Local 1776, BRAMPTON; Guila Cukier, Local 905, MARKHAM; and, Dan Harding, Local 960, OSHAWA.
As a result of Resolution No. 55 submitted by Local 2669 Saskatchewan passed at the 2011 CUPE National Convention in Vancouver, a National Library Committee was formed. The National Library Committee is now one of 17 advisory committees and working groups under the NEB. The mandate of the committee is to advise the NEB on library and library worker issues.
In an era of continual cutbacks and constant "doom and gloom" economic news, Port Hope library workers took matters into their own hands and voted to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) to improve job security and have Canada's largest union on their side.
